the science of Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback 101

Founded in basic and applied neuroscience and data-based clinical practice, neurofeedback training (NFT) focuses simultaneously on the central nervous system and the brain. Brain activity signals provide feedback to your NFT specialist who applies rewards to establish new neuropathways increasing flexibility and self-regulation of relaxation and activation patterns.

Neurofeedback is completely non-invasive and training involves learned activity only, meaning nothing is directly being done to the trainee.

It’s the same physiological process in our brain as learning how to ride a bike!

Neurofeedback vs biofeedback

Think of getting a brain workout!

Neurofeedback is a subcategory of biofeedback that follows the idea of learned physiological behavior. The main difference is neurofeedback is an unconscious process focused on electrical activity in the brain, and biofeedback is a conscious process focused on our physiological state. In other words, with biofeedback you are thinking about what you can change and are consciously making that change (breathing deeper, thinking about the beach, being mindful of your body in the room) in order to achieve a reward. For neurofeedback, you are not consciously changing anything! Your brain automatically picks up the feedback on its own and will alter its activity to receive the most reward.

Steps to healing

To start off your training, EEG electrodes are placed at key locations on your scalp. These receive electrical signals from your brain and send those readings to a neurofeedback-specific computer program. With this information, we develop your own unique Brain Map(qEEG).

Steps to better brain functioning

Our clinicians use protocols developed by our experts' evaluation of your Brain Map to run your neurofeedback training session.

Sidenote: Our clinicians work with a team of world-renowned experts to setup treatment goals that are specifically unique to your brain construct.

Steps to starting neurofeedback

While you sit comfortably viewing TV shows or movies, your established protocol provides a reward when your brain hits those goals. Visual and auditory brain rewards happen like this:

Met goals receive audible bells and the video screen brightens.

Unmet goals receive no auditory bells and the video dims.

WELCOME TO NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING

Now, your brain is transforming beyond your trauma!

Since this is unconscious learning, as long as you watch the visual and hear the auditory feedback then your brain is training.

In other words...
Neurofeedback training is possible because the brain continuously seeks novel information and reward.

Now, your brain is in active training. The brainwaves are being balanced which allows for optimal brain functioning.

Congratulations, you are on our way!

Brainwave Breakdown

Each brainwave serves a different function, and changes depending on the area of the brain. These functions range from feeling alert and attentive to meditative and sleepy, depending on the current environment and task at hand.

Brainwave     Range in Hz      Function

Delta                     1-4                  slow wave associated with deep sleep & complex problem solving

Theta                    4-7                  slow wave responsible for creativity, meditation, & deep insight

Alpha                   8-12                 slow wave associated with processing speed & cognitive performance

Lobeta/SMR        12-15               fast wave that reflects external reflection & motor control

Beta                    15-20               fast wave known for an alert & focused state

Hibeta                20-33               fast wave associated with hyperfocus & peak performance

Gamma             33-50               fast wave responsible for high mental processing & peak performance

For Trauma Treatment...

The main types of neurofeedback training protocols our clinicians employ:

     o Infraslow Fluctuation Training (ISF)

     o SMR training

     o Amplitude/Power Training

     o Referential Training

     o Multivariate Coherence (MVC)

     o Alpha-Theta Training
